HUMAN IT is a multi-disciplinary and scholarly journal with the goal of bringing forth new research and discussion about digital media as communicative, aesthetic, and ludic instruments.

We welcome contributions from the humanities, the social, behavioural, and natural sciences, as well as technology. Accepted languages are the Nordic languages and English.

Karolina Wirdenäs

Karolina Wirdenäs is an Associate professor in Scandinavian languages at the Department of Swedish and multilingualism, Stockholm University. Her research is mainly within the fields of interactional sociolinguistics and conversation analysis, but she also takes an interest in applied linguistics like classroom interaction, writing development and communication in institutional health settings. In her previous work she has studied senior citizens as teachers and learners of mobile phone usage.

Theres Bellander
Departement of swedish and multilingualism, Stockholm university

Theres Bellander received her PhD in Swedish linguistics from the University of Uppsala in Sweden. She is a senior lecturer at Stockholm University. She is active in the language and learning field and much of her research concerns digital communication. She has studied adolescents’ daily interaction through a variety of media and senior citizens’ adjustment to the digital society. She is currently working in a project which, through linguistic ethnography and multimodal discourse analysis, investigates parent’s health literacy and knowledge building after a prenatal diagnosis of a congenital heart defect in their fetus.

Abstract

In this article we show and discuss the results from an empirical study with a social constructivist perspective, where we explore the combination of two socially and interactively constructed categories: senior citizens and young persons. In the study the paradoxical discourse that surrounds beliefs about usage of ICT in the two different stages of life is highlighted. The data is collected from a blog of a senior citizen and from media interviews with the blogger. The analysis points to the beliefs and expectations that are expressed regarding the use of digital information and interaction technology, and contributes to the discussion of the place and role of senior citizens in today’s society.
